DETROIT, February 1, 2019—while the partial government shutdown ended a week ago, many federal workers and their families in the Detroit area are struggling to pay for basic necessities, like diapers for their children. One local nonprofit is stepping in to help.
On Thursday, February 7th the Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank will offer free packages of diapers to families affected by the government shutdown, including federal contractors and service workers, at 6 Pop Up distribution locations in Detroit. The diapers will be available at the following locations:
• Mathis Community Center, 19300 Greenfield, Detroit 48235, 12 noon to 5 pm
• Allen Temple CME Church, 9245 Kercheval, Detroit 48214, 5 pm – 7 pm
• Macomb County Resource Center, 196 N. Rose Street, Mt Clemens 48043, 10 am – 2 pm
• DABO, 12048 Grand River, Detroit 48204
• Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac 48342, 2 pm – 4 pm
Federal workers must bring a government work ID and a birth certificate or shot record for each child needing diapers. For each child parents will receive 100 disposable diapers free of charge. Adult incontinence supplies are available upon request also. Please, email size and location to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 313-356-6470 and leave a message.
“We know that many families in our community are unable to afford basic necessities, which is why we offer help to those experiencing diaper need throughout the year. All babies deserve clean diapers, and we’re fortunate to be able to offer this support to federal workers and their families,” said Veronica Claybrone, executive director of Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank.
One in three U.S. families experiences diaper need, which is the lack of enough diapers to keep a baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy. Diaper need impacts the physical, emotional, and economic well-being of children and families.
Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank relies on ongoing community support to be able to help families in diaper need. Those able to help are encouraged to make a financial contribution at detroitdiaperbank.com or visit the diaper bank’s Amazon Wish List to purchase diapers for delivery to the organization’s warehouse.
For those unable to attend the Pop-Up event, an appointment can be made for a later date by emailing:
